Please DO NOT PANIC. The CDC’s recommendations and Government’s actions are mainly to minimize the spread of the virus. Here are some of our advice to combat COVID-19.
PREVENTION: Steps to avoid or minimize the chance of getting the virus:
- Wash and sanitize your hands, even under your fingernails.
- 2.Avoid touching your face before taking step #1.
- 3.Avoid large crowds in an enclosed area.
- 4.Stay healthy – get a good night’s sleep, exercise, eat healthy, and stay hydrated.
- 5.If you have a weakened immune system, boost your immune system with vitamin C and zinc.
PREPARATION: Preparing for the COVID-19 disease. Make sure you have the following in your home:
- Kleenex or any facial tissue of your choice to cover a sneeze, cough, or runny nose.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to combat fever.
- Cough/cold medicine – for example: Mucinex DM, Robitussin, or Dayquil/Nyquil.
- At least one month, preferably three months if possible, of your chronic medications.
- If you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or any other lung disease – make sure your rescue inhaler (Albuterol or Combivent) is up to date. Also make sure you have a nebulizer machine and solution.
- For lung or heart disease patients, if you are currently on oxygen make sure your oxygen tank is full.
- Enough food and toiletries for one month.
If you are SICK and think you may have COVID-19:
- Avoid exposure to other people – stay at home and rest, and wear a mask if you have to leave your room.
- Keep yourself hydrated.
- Use over-the-counter medications to treat symptoms.
- For asthma, COPD, or emphysema patients – keep up with your inhaler, use your rescue inhaler as needed – if the inhaler becomes difficult to use, use your nebulizer machine to deliver the medicine.
- For those who don’t have histories of lung disease and don’t have inhalers or nebulizer machines – use humidifiers to help chest congestion and tightness. If no humidifier then turn the shower on hot and sit in the shower room to breathe in the steam.
- Go to the ER (be sure to notify them first when you are coming, if possible) if:
- *Your fever is very high and can’t be managed by acetaminophen (Tylenol)
- *You have shortness of breath.
- *You can’t maintain hydration and are very weak.
